Know about the Battle of Plassey

When Alivardi Khan died in 1756, Siraj-ud-daula became the Nawab of Bengal. The Company was concerned about its power and longed for a puppet ruler who would voluntarily grant trade concessions and other privileges. So it tried. Without success, one of Siraj-ud-Daulah’s rivals to help him become the Nawab. An autocratic Siraj-ud-daula asked the Company to interfere in the political affairs of his dominions, to close the fortifications and to pay the revenue. After negotiations failed, the Nawab left for the English factory at Qasimbazar with 30,000 soldiers, captured Company officers, locked the warehouse, disarmed all the British, and blocked the English ships, Then he marched till Calcutta.

To establish control over the Company’s fort. Upon hearing of the fall of Calcutta, Company officers in Madras sent troops under the command of Robert Clive, reinforced by a naval fleet. Had a long conversation with the Nawab. Finally, in 1757, Robert Clive led the Company’s army against Siraj-ud-Daulah at Plassey. One of the main reasons for the defeat of the Nawab was the army led by Mir Jafar.

Siraj-ud-Daulah’s general, never fought. After crushing Siraj-ud-Daulah, Clive managed to garner his support by promising to make him the Nawab.

The Battle of Plassey became famous because it was the first major victory that the Company won in India.

After the defeat at Plassey. Siraj-ud-Daulah was assassinated and Mir Jafar made the Nawab. The company was still prepared to take on the responsibility of administration. Its main objective was the expansion of trade. If this can be done without conquest, with the help of local rulers who were ready to grant privileges, then there is no need to take territories directly.

Soon the company learned it was difficult. Even the puppet nawabs weren’t always as helpful as the company wanted them to be. After all, if they want respect from their subjects, they must maintain a basic form of respect and sovereignty.

What could the company do? When Mir Jafar protested, the company removed him and installed Mir Qasim in his place. When Mir Qasim complained, he was defeated in the battle fought at Buxar (1764). was driven out of Bengal, and Mir Jafar was re-established. The Nawab had to pay 500,000 rupees every month, but the company needed more money to finance its wars and to meet the demands of trade and its other expenses. It wanted more territory and more revenue.

By the time Mir Jafar died in 1765, the mood of the Company had changed. After failing to work with the puppet nawabs, Clive declared: “We should really be the nawabs ourselves.”

Finally, in 1765 the Mughal Emperor appointed the Company as the Diwan of the Provinces of Bengal. The Diwani allowed the Company to utilize the vast revenue resources of Bengal. This solved a major problem the company had faced earlier. Its trade with India had expanded from the beginning of the eighteenth century. But it had to buy most of the goods from India along with gold and silver which were imported from Britain.

This was because Britain did not have any goods to sell in India at this time. The flow of gold from Britain slowed down after the Battle of Plassey. And after the perception of the addict completely stopped. Now the revenue from India can finance the expenses of the company. These revenues could be used to meet the cost of buying cotton and silk garments in India, maintaining the Company’s troops, and building the Company’s fort and offices in Calcutta.
