Sufi Saints of Sindh
Sindh was also a great center of Neo Sufism. Many Sufi saints were born here. The account of the mystics of Sindh begins with Shah Karim, who lived around 1600 AD. He got his first religious inspiration from a Vaishnava saint near Ahmedabad, who introduced him to the mysteries of Om. This symbol acted as a lamp-pillar for him.
Another notable mystic was Shah Inayat, a publicly respected figure. When Hindus of Sindh were migrating in large numbers to protect their life and religion from the persecution of the Kalhora rulers, it was he who gave shelter to many such refugee families in his ashram. He was eventually hanged because of his belief that ‘God is not the property of any particular sect’.
It was not unusual in Sindh to find a Hindu as the Guru of the Muslims or a Muslim as the Guru of the Hindus. Sindhi men and women still sing songs of Sufi mystic poets Vadil and Bekas widely today. Bekas’s real name was Mohammad Hussain. He has left a deep impact on the religious life of Sindh. The poets Rohal and Qutb also belonged to this tradition and the songs they wrote are as sweet as they are enigmatic. Both Hindus and Muslims used to congregate at his tombs and chant religious songs throughout the night.
