Know about Bhakti Movement

The Bhakti movement is more ancient than the Sufi movements. Its philosophical concept is fully expounded in the Upanishads and in later times the Bhagavad Gita emphasized love and devotion to walk on the path of God. In the 6th century AD, the concept of Bhakti was placed on a higher ground in the Bhagavata Purana.

Monotheism, love and devotion became prominent features of Indian religious thought during the post-Bhagavata period. In South India, the concept of Bhakti was established on a prosperous pedestal when Shankaracharya revived the ideology of Vedanta or Advaita. After Shankaracharya, twelve Tamil Vaishnava sages, who were jointly known as ‘Alvars’, made Bhakti very popular. After the Alvars, the Vaishnava masters provided the spiritual base to the Bhakti movements.

According to this ideology, ‘Parmatma’ is not Nirguna but ‘Sagun’, in which the qualities of Shiva and Sundar are present in unlimited quantities. The early pioneers of the Bhakti movement were from India, whose disciple Ramananda took the Bhakti movement to northern India. From this point of view it is right to consider him as a bridge between the Bhakti movement of the South and India.
