The Indus or Harappan culture is older than many of the Chalcolithic cultures that have been described in the past, but where is it more developed than those cultures. The rise of this culture took place in the western part of the Indian subcontinent in the Chalcolithic background.
It was named Harappan culture because it was first detected in 1921 at a modern site called Harappa located in the province of Pakistan. Many sites in Sindh became central areas of Pre-Harappan culture. As a result, that culture matured into an urban civilization in the Indus and the Punjab.
The center of this mature Harappan culture lies in Punjab and Sindh, mainly in the Indus Valley. From here it expanded to the south and east. Thus the Harappan culture included not only parts of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan, but also the marginal parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh.
It spread from Jammu in the north to the mouth of the Narmada River in the south and from the Makran beach of Balochistan in the west to Meerut in the northeast. The entire area is in the shape of a triangle. Its entire area is about 1,299,600 square kilometers. Therefore, this area is bigger than Pakistan, but definitely bigger than ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. In the 3rd and 2nd millennium BC, the area of no culture around the world was greater than that of the Harappan culture.
